People schedule meetings because they are lazy
The ability to describe a situation succinctly and with precision, in writing, is one of those invaluable skills that's indispensable for working in a distributed/remote team, and for working in general.
But writing is a form of thinking things through, and writing succinctly and with precision requires the effort to distill the essence of the argument. So, many times, people skip the thinking and schedule a meeting or video call to "talk things through".
So much time is wasted in meetings because people are not willing to do the work.
