Nokia’s PureView camera fake ad: an effort to loose trust in your product

2012-09-06 by Roberto Zoia Leave a Comment

The Verge caught Nokia cheating on its PureView camera ad. The video, which supposedly demonstrated the camera’s great stabilization technology, was shot with professional equipment instead of a PureView camera.

From the apology by Nokia:

In an effort to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization (which eliminates blurry images and improves pictures shot in low light conditions), we produced a video that simulates what we will be able to deliver with OIS.

Nokia was not demonstrating the benefits of image stabilization in general, but the PureView camera features. I find it hard to believe they simply forgot to place a disclaimer in the ad. If the Nokia’s technology is so great, why are they afraid to show the videos shot by their camera?

I wonder if there has been an official explanation inside Nokia about what happened. Has someone been held responsible for the “confusion created”? What would you think about this if you worked at Nokia at the business unit in charge of the PureView camera?

Update: It seems that the still images used by Nokia in the video are not from the PureView camera either were fake too.
